FRIDAY MOMMY NEWS QUICKIE

I'm literally on my way out the door for a week of vacation, but I wanted to leave behind a topic of discussion in my absence:

Do career women make for lousy wives?

See the following story on Forbes.com. Michael Noer's column was initially published alone, pulled because of strong reaction, and finally republished with a woman's "counterpoint" alongside it.

Have a good weekend.

I think reaction to Noer's column is the latest example of the PC police taking things out of context. What he said was controversial (at least the headline of it), but we have to at least consider whether it's true. DO career women make lousy wives? Of course not, as a rule. But is it HARDER, from a man's perspective, to be married to a woman who has another major competing interest in her life? Probably so. So given a choice, should men considering marriage look for non-career women? That's a personal decision based on a lot of factors, but clearly something to consider.

Numbers usually don't lie, and the statistics Noer quoted certainly make sense. He said that career women are "more likely to get divorced (sure if the job proves to be a 3rd wheel in the marriage), more likely to cheat (she's around more people to cheat WITH) and less likely to have children (when does she find time?). I do take issue with his assertion that "if they do have kids, they are more likely to be unhappy about it." From experience, I'd venture many of these women aren't unhappy about the KIDS, but unhappy she doesn't have enough time to spend with them. Or unhappy that, unlike her male counterpart, she may have to sacrifice her career mobility to be a good mother.

It seems we're so quick to judge the headline without reading what's behind it. I think Noer has a point that may or may not apply to every marriage, but certainly to some.
